Six Family Members Drown in Cauvery River During Urus Gathering in Mysuru

On Sunday afternoon, six members of an extended family, including three children, drowned in the Cauvery River in Mysuru district, Karnataka. The event took place during an Urus gathering, which commemorates the death anniversary of a Sufi saint.

The drowning occurred near the Arkeshwara Temple in the K R Nagar taluk. According to police reports, the family of approximately 20 individuals, including distant relatives, had convened at the Hazrat Khader Lingavali Dargah located by the riverbanks in Hale Yedathore.

Sequence of Events

At around 3 PM, one child slipped into the water, prompting others to jump in to help. Tragically, those who entered the river to assist soon became swept away by the currents, leading to the fatalities, as reported by local law enforcement.

The victims have been identified as six individuals: Fatima, 42, and her five-year-old son Uzeir, both residents of Udayagiri in Mysuru; newly-weds Mohammed Yasin, 23, and Neha Kausar, 19, from SBR Layout in Bengaluru; and two thirteen-year-olds, Emma Aiman from Kadugondanahalli, Bengaluru, and Afif Ahmed from Muslim Block in K R Nagar.

Rescue Efforts

Local fishers were able to rescue three other family members, who are now receiving treatment for their injuries. The rescued individuals have been identified as Salma Banu from KR Nagar, Asiya from Mysuru, and Zubeda from Bannur.

Government Response

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences regarding the tragic incident via social media. He also announced that the families of each victim would receive compensation of Rs 5 lakh to alleviate their financial burden during this difficult time.
