Puducherry Elections 2026: Significant Candidates and Key Contests
Overview of the Election
The Puducherry Assembly elections took place on April 9, covering all 30 constituencies in a single phase, with results set to be announced on May 4. The electoral battle featured a direct face-off between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the All India NR Congress and the BJP, and an opposition alliance that includes the Congress party and its regional partners. This election also marked the entry of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), an outfit led by actor Vijay. A notable voter turnout of 89.87 percent was recorded, marking the highest participation rate in the Union Territory since its integration with India in 1964.
Key Candidates
A Namassivayam, currently serving as the home minister and a senior leader of the BJP, is contesting from the Mannadipet constituency. Previously a president of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee, he was suspended for anti-party activities in January 2021. Shortly thereafter, he resigned his MLA position and transitioned to the BJP, winning the Mannadipet seat in the 2021 Assembly elections by a margin of 2,750 votes against the DMK candidate.
A Johnkumar, the Minister of Minority Affairs, is running from the Mudaliarpet constituency. He began his political career as a Congress candidate, winning in the Nellithope constituency in the 2016 Assembly elections and later securing a by-election victory in Kamaraj Nagar in 2019. After joining the BJP in February 2021, he won again as a BJP candidate from Kamaraj Nagar in the 2021 elections. He has served as a cabinet minister in the Puducherry Government. His political journey has been marred by income tax raids in 2016, where officials reportedly discovered significant amounts of cash at his residence.
VP Ramalingam, the current chief of Puducherry BJP, is contesting from the Raj Bhavan constituency. This constituency is crucial as it features a multi-cornered contest against Congress candidate R Kumaran, DMK’s Vignesh Kannan, NTK nominee Karpagavalli, and TVK’s VJ Chandran. Ramalingam became a member of the legislative assembly in 2021 after being nominated by the central government. He comes from a politically active family with his brother, VP Sivakolundhu, being a former Congress leader and ex-Speaker of the Puducherry Assembly.
Former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam is contesting from Thattanchavady against the current Chief Minister N Rangaswamy of AINRC. This contest is considered one of the most critical in the upcoming elections. Vaithilingam has had a long political career beginning in 1980 and has held several prominent roles, including minister, leader of opposition, Assembly speaker, and chief minister, completing multiple terms between 1991 and 2011. He became the second-youngest chief minister of Puducherry at age 40.
R Siva, a senior DMK leader, is contesting from the Villianur constituency. He has been a prominent figure in Puducherry politics, having first been elected to the Assembly in 1996. He currently serves as the leader of opposition and achieved electoral success in 2021. Following that victory, the DMK leader MK Stalin recognized his efforts by appointing him as the first secretary of the DMK’s Puducherry unit.
A M H Nazeem, a former minister and senior leader of the DMK, is contesting from Karaikkal South. His political career began in 1983, and he first won a seat in the Assembly in 1990. Nazeem has held multiple terms representing the Karaikal area and served as health minister when the DMK was in power during 1996. He returned significantly in 2021 after narrowly losing an election in 2016 by just 20 votes.
V Saminathan, who previously served as Puducherry BJP president, is contesting for the TVK from Lawspet. He is up against AINRC’s former Assembly speaker, VP Sivakolundhu. Saminathan’s political career began in the late 1990s, eventually becoming a member of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly in 2017, following multiple tenures as the BJP’s state president.
