Trump and Modi Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and Middle East Situation
Phone Call Highlights
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and US President Donald Trump engaged in a telephone conversation, addressing the current situation in the Middle East and exploring avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation. This discussion marked their first direct communication since a ceasefire agreement was reached between Washington and Tehran. The call extended for approximately 40 minutes.
During the conversation, both leaders underscored the significance of maintaining the security and openness of the Strait of Hormuz. PM Modi expressed India’s ongoing dedication to fortifying the strategic partnership with the United States across various domains.
Details from the Conversation
In a social media post released after the call, PM Modi stated, “Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors.” He emphasized the commitment to further strengthen their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Additionally, he mentioned discussions on the West Asia situation, reiterating the importance of an open and secure Strait of Hormuz.
US Envoy’s Insight
Sergio Gor, the US envoy to India, characterized the call as “very positive and productive.” He noted that President Trump routinely provides updates to PM Modi regarding developments in the Middle East and significant matters affecting the US-India relationship.
Gor further elaborated to NDTV that, following their recent interaction, discussions included key issues related to the Middle East, along with other critical topics concerning bilateral ties.
Potential Role of India
When asked about the possibility of India mediating in the peace process between the US and Iran, Gor indicated that Washington would be receptive to India’s involvement in such efforts.
During the call, President Trump reportedly conveyed to PM Modi, “I just want you to know we all love you,” according to the envoy’s statements to news agency PTI.
Previous Communications
This latest communication follows an earlier discussion on March 24, where PM Modi expressed India’s support for de-escalation and the swift restoration of peace in the Middle East. The talks in March also emphasized the critical need for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open and secure for global trade and navigation.
The backdrop of this call involves ongoing tensions, with the US and Iran currently experiencing a fragile ceasefire lasting two weeks. This situation persists as both nations attempt to initiate a second round of discussions following unsuccessful negotiations in Pakistan.
Current Context
The recent call between the two leaders coincides with the United States imposing a new blockade on Iranian ports, amid ongoing Iranian restrictions on vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. The evolving dynamics in the region may influence further conversations and the nature of cooperation between India and the US.
In a previous conversation held on February 2, Trump and Modi discussed advancements related to the bilateral trade agreement, underscoring the multifaceted nature of their relationship beyond geopolitical concerns.
