Nitish Kumar Resigns as Chief Minister of Bihar; BJP’s Samrat Choudhary Expected to Take Oath Tomorrow
Resignation of Nitish Kumar
Nitish Kumar has officially resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar, concluding his tenure that spanned nearly two decades and ten terms in office. He submitted his resignation to Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) at Raj Bhavan earlier today, after dissolving his cabinet.
Following his resignation, Kumar expressed his full support for the incoming government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to assume control of the state, with senior leader Samrat Choudhary likely to be sworn in as the new Chief Minister tomorrow.
Transition to National Politics
Kumar’s decision to resign coincides with his recent election to the Rajya Sabha, marking a significant shift from state-level governance to national responsibilities. Earlier in the day, he held his final cabinet meeting, attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with other officials.
In a statement on social media, Kumar reflected on his government’s consistent efforts to serve the people of Bihar over the years. He noted that since the establishment of the first NDA government in the state on November 24, 2005, there has been a notable focus on law and order as well as development across diverse sectors.
Achievements and Legacy
During his tenure, Kumar emphasized the progress made across all segments of society, irrespective of religious or caste backgrounds. He stated that initiatives had been implemented to benefit women and youth, contributing to the comprehensive development of the state.
Kumar also acknowledged the central government’s support in the state’s growth, expressing confidence that Bihar would continue to advance and play a significant role in the nation’s overall progress.
Samrat Choudhary’s Ascendancy
Samrat Choudhary, a prominent figure in the BJP and former deputy chief minister, is set to lead Bihar in the post-Nitish Kumar era. Choudhary, who previously headed the BJP’s Bihar unit from 2023 to 2024, has been unanimously elected as the legislative leader of the party in the state.
The announcement of Choudhary’s candidacy for the chief minister position was made by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who acted as the BJP’s central observer in this transition. Another deputy chief minister, Vijay Sinha, had put forth Choudhary’s name for the role.
In his remarks regarding his vision for Bihar, Choudhary expressed his commitment to realizing the aspirations for a developed state. He is anticipated to take his oath of office tomorrow, which would mark him as the first-ever BJP chief minister in Bihar’s history.
