Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Ongoing Inquiry
Resignation Details
Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court has submitted his resignation as an inquiry is underway regarding the discovery of a significant amount of cash at his residence last year. Notably, this resignation comes on the very day he was set to begin his defense arguments against corruption allegations, according to sources.
Varma formally communicated his resignation to the President yesterday but did not provide any specific reasons for his decision. The resignation coincides with an ongoing impeachment process initiated by the Parliament for his removal, which began in July of the previous year.
Impeachment Inquiry Process
A three-member panel was established to investigate the allegations against him, as directed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Sources indicate that Justice Varma had been granted time from April 10 to April 14 to present his defense, following the completion of the prosecution’s arguments before the inquiry committee in March.
Throughout the inquiry, nine key witnesses were examined against Justice Varma. The panel responsible for the investigation was reconstituted earlier this year and included Supreme Court Judge Aravind Kumar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Shree Chandrashekhar, and senior advocate BV Acharya from the Karnataka High Court.
Impact of Resignation on Impeachment Process
A source within the Lok Sabha Secretariat stated that Justice Varma’s resignation effectively concludes the impeachment process initiated against him. Moreover, by resigning, he remains eligible for pension and other retirement benefits typically accorded to high court judges, which would not have been the case had he been impeached.
Background of the Case
Justice Varma had faced scrutiny since a large sum of cash was reportedly found during a raid at his official residence in Lutyens’ Delhi on March 14, 2025. At that time, he was serving as a judge at the Delhi High Court. The cash was discovered in a storeroom adjacent to the servants’ quarters, although Justice Varma has denied any involvement, asserting that he or his family members never stored cash there.
In light of the developments, the Supreme Court had removed Justice Varma from his judicial responsibilities at the Delhi High Court. Following this, he was transferred back to his original court at Allahabad High Court, where he was instructed by the Chief Justice not to engage in any judicial work during the ongoing inquiry.
