Punjab Implements Daily SMS Alerts for School Attendance Tracking
Introduction of Attendance Tracking System
The Punjab government has initiated a daily SMS alert system to enhance real-time accountability regarding student attendance in state-run schools. This program is a part of Mission Samrath 4.0, which aims to improve foundational learning and was launched on Thursday by Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains and AAP’s Punjab affairs in charge, Manish Sisodia. Bains emphasized that this initiative is a continuation of the government’s ‘Sikhya Kranti’ program, designed to ensure effective classroom accountability and improve teaching practices.
Bains noted that Punjab’s successful performance in the PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) survey has allowed the state to transition from recognition to actionable results.
Increased Education Budget
The Education Minister announced that the education budget has been significantly raised to ₹19,279 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year, up from ₹12,657 crore in 2021-22. He assured that the allocated funds are reaching classrooms directly, stating, “This money isn’t just on paper. It has reached every school,” contrasting the previous practice of teachers needing to raise funds for basic requirements like toilet repairs.
Bains also highlighted the timely delivery of textbooks to students this year, indicating that the Punjab government successfully provided free textbooks to every child by April 1. Previously, teachers had to photocopy textbook pages as the books were often delayed until late September or October.
Details of Daily Alerts and Attendance Protocol
The newly introduced attendance-tracking system under Mission Samrath 2026-27 will ensure that parents receive daily SMS alerts regarding their child’s attendance, which will also notify them of any absences. This initiative aims to promote regular attendance, enhance learning continuity, and improve classroom engagement.
According to Bains, any student absent for seven days will prompt contact from district authorities, while an absence exceeding 15 days will escalate to state headquarters. This approach is intended to maintain both educational continuity and the safety of the child.
Focus on Quality Education and Learning Outcomes
During the launch, Bains discussed the objectives of Mission Samrath, emphasizing the enhancement of teaching quality through rigorous attendance tracking. The initiative is focused on ensuring that every child from grades 3 to 8 achieves proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics. Recent data reflects that Punjab has exceeded the national average in foundational learning by 18% for grade 3 and by 26–28% for grade 6.
Manish Sisodia, during the event, presented the Mission Samrath Compendium, which catalogues 38 effective classroom practices established by Punjab’s teachers. These practices will be implemented across schools to facilitate improved learning outcomes, particularly for students who may require extra assistance.
Significance of Accountability in Education
Sisodia articulated the significance of real-time accountability in education, stating that while many political leaders provide speeches, it is tangible actions that truly make a difference. He illustrated this with the message parents will receive, confirming their child’s safe arrival at school, stressing that such accountability is crucial for fostering trust and engagement.
Sonali Giri, Secretary of School Education, conveyed the aim of making every student and parent feel a sense of pride in being part of government schools. The Mission Samrath initiative is grounded in a classroom-focused methodology, prioritizing teaching based on individual learning levels rather than grade levels. This is supported by regular assessments to identify educational gaps, alongside activity-based learning and ongoing mentorship for educators.
