Rajasthan Schools To Review Students’ Names, Drive To Replace Derogatory Terms Announced

Launch of the “Sarthak Naam Abhiyan”

The Rajasthan School Education Department is initiating a campaign named “Sarthak Naam Abhiyan,” or the Meaningful Names Campaign, aimed at promoting dignity and inclusivity among students. This initiative will involve collaboration with parents to identify and replace student names that are deemed derogatory, meaningless, or potentially discomforting.

State Education Minister Madan Dilawar announced the initiative, emphasizing the importance of selecting names with consideration of their long-term impact. He noted that many children are given names without thoughtful deliberation, often due to social conventions. As these children grow older, they may experience embarrassment or a sense of inferiority linked to their names.

The department has compiled a list of approximately 2,000 to 3,000 alternative names that parents can choose from. School officials will engage with families to encourage the adoption of more meaningful and respectful names for their children.

Addressing Derogatory Terms in Official Records

In addition to the names campaign, the Education Minister highlighted the necessity of ensuring that official records do not contain caste-based or derogatory terms. He underscored that words which have historically been used in a pejorative manner should be omitted, calling for the adoption of more respectful terminology consistent with existing government directives.

Monitoring Tobacco and Intoxicant Use Among School Staff

As part of the broader initiative, the school education department will create a list of school staff found to be consuming tobacco, gutka, or other intoxicants on school premises. This move aims to discourage such habits and mitigate any adverse influence these behaviors may have on students.

The program is expected to be rolled out across government schools within the state in the forthcoming months, contributing to a healthier and more respectful school environment for all students.
