Dhurandhar 2 Faces Legal Issues Over Alleged Unauthorized Use of ‘Tirchi Topi Wale’ Song
Legal Controversy Surrounds Box Office Hit
Aditya Dhar’s latest film, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, is experiencing a significant legal controversy despite its success at the box office. The film has reportedly come under scrutiny for allegedly using the popular song ‘Tirchi Topi Wale’ from the 1989 movie Tridev without proper authorization.
Trimurti Films, the production company associated with the original song, has filed a lawsuit against Dhar’s production house, B62 Studios, alleging copyright infringement. The song was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji alongside Viju Shah, with lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi and vocals provided by Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukherjee. The song remains widely recognized and loved by audiences.
Claims of Copyright Infringement
According to reports from Bar and Bench, Trimurti Films asserts that the song, or a version resembling it, has been incorporated into Dhurandhar 2 without securing the necessary music rights or authorizations. The lawsuit includes demands for ownership or control over the rights to the musical work and sound recording.
The production company claims that the use of the song amounts to copyright violation and includes unauthorized releases on public platforms. The film utilizes the track in a remix titled Rang De Lal, which has been crafted by composer Shashwat Sachdev. Trimurti Films has requested a directive to prevent any further use of the track, alongside compensation and additional legal remedies.
Concerns Over Monetization
As part of the legal filing, Trimurti Films has raised concerns regarding potential monetization of the song through various channels, including theatrical distributions, streaming platforms, and marketing efforts. The case highlights ongoing issues related to music rights in the film industry.
Aditya Dhar Commends Composer Shashwat Sachdev
In the midst of the legal dispute, Aditya Dhar took to social media to commend composer Shashwat Sachdev for his hard work on the music for Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2. In his post, Dhar described their collaboration as transcending professional boundaries, stating that it has grown into a deeply personal relationship.
Dhar expressed admiration for the creative process they shared, mentioning that Sachdev produced nine songs in nine days for the first part of the film, followed by an impressive 14 songs in 11 days for the sequel. He praised Sachdev’s dedication to the project, indicating a close personal bond beyond just the roles of director and composer.
Box Office Performance of Dhurandhar 2
Dhurandhar 2 was released in theaters on March 19 and features a star-studded cast, including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun. The film has performed exceptionally well, grossing Rs 1,246.67 crore and netting Rs 1,041.27 crore domestically. Its worldwide earnings have reached Rs 1,653.67 crore (approximately $178 million), positioning it as the 10th highest-grossing film globally for 2026.
The film is now targeting the lifetime worldwide total of Pushpa 2: The Rule, which stands at Rs 1,742.10 crore. Should Dhurandhar 2 surpass this figure, it could solidify its place as the third-highest-grossing Indian film in history, notably without having released in the Chinese market.
