Priyanka Gandhi Criticizes Assam CM for Remarks on Kharge, Seeks PM’s Response
Rebuke Over Derogatory Language
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi has condemned the remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, describing them as “vulgar” and “insulting.” She emphasized that Sarma’s comments were “utterly shameful and unacceptable” and called for clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his stance on the issue.
Sarma’s comments were made following Kharge’s call for investigations by central agencies into various allegations against the Chief Minister. Sarma criticized Kharge by stating that he is “aging” and speaking like a “pagal” (madman). He further questioned Kharge’s request for engaging the external affairs minister for verification of facts.
Response from Priyanka Gandhi
In a post on X, Priyanka Gandhi denounced Sarma’s language as “derogatory,” “indecent,” and “unacceptable.” She highlighted that Kharge is not only a senior leader of the Congress party but also a significant representative for Dalits and marginalized communities in India. By insulting him, Gandhi stated, Sarma has, in essence, insulted millions of Indians.
Gandhi urged Prime Minister Modi to clarify his position, questioning if he condoned what she referred to as an insult to “crores of Indians.” She insisted that the Prime Minister should address the nation regarding his views on the matter.
Comments from Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed his disapproval of Sarma’s comments on X, labeling the derogatory remarks directed at Mallikarjun Kharge as an affront to the entire Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe community. He suggested that Prime Minister Modi’s silence on the issue signals not helplessness but consent.
Rahul Gandhi asserted that if the Prime Minister observes an attack on the dignity of millions of Dalits and remains silent, he is neglecting his responsibilities and becoming complicit in the insult. He further accused the BJP-RSS of harboring a “long-standing and premeditated mindset” against Dalits and highlighted a pattern where Dalit leaders are demeaned when they speak the truth.
