Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Issues Apology for Controversial Remarks on Gujarat

Clarification of Remarks

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge issued an apology on Wednesday for comments he made regarding the people of Gujarat, stating that his remarks were intentionally misconstrued. His statement came through a post on X, where he expressed sincere regret for any offense caused. Kharge emphasized that he holds great respect for the people of Gujarat and had no intention of hurting their sentiments.

The situation arose from his speech at an election rally in Idukki district, Kerala, where he remarked that residents of Kerala were ‘educated and clever’ and thus less susceptible to deception compared to those he described as ‘illiterate’ in Gujarat and some other states.

BJP Responds Strongly

Kharge’s comments elicited strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which labeled his statements as offensive and unacceptable. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad characterized the remarks as “shameless, demeaning and utterly despicable.”

Prasad called on prominent Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to clarify their stance on Kharge’s comments. He questioned Kharge’s suitability to serve as Congress President, noting that the position has been held by esteemed leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Furthermore, he urged the Congress leadership to distance itself from Kharge’s remarks.

Highlighting Gujarat’s contributions and its literacy rate, Prasad asserted that such comments disrespect the state’s inhabitants. In addition, the BJP demanded a formal apology from Kharge on behalf of the people of Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

Congress Leaders Weigh In

In the wake of the controversy, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in political discourse. He asserted that public debate should be constructive rather than resorting to language that undermines its quality.

Local Leaders Criticize Remarks

Meanwhile, Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi condemned Kharge’s comments, describing them as an insult to the people and the legacy of the state. He pointed out that Gujarat, known for producing prominent leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, would not tolerate such derogatory comments.
