Bangladesh Achieves Historic Test Series Sweep Over Pakistan
Bangladesh’s Historic Win
Bangladesh has successfully completed a 2-0 Test series sweep against Pakistan, which has led to significant changes in the ICC World Test Championship (2025-27) standings. This achievement has propelled the Bangladesh team to fifth place in the rankings, while India’s position has deteriorated to sixth.
The victory in the second Test in Sylhet was secured by a margin of 78 runs, complementing their first Test win in Mirpur. Bangladesh’s points percentage (PCT) has now risen to 58.33% from four matches, placing them ahead of India, which has a PCT of 48.15%.
Impact on the Standings
Currently, defending champions Australia sit at the top of the standings with an 87.50% PCT, followed by New Zealand and South Africa. Pakistan’s struggles in the longest format of the game have seen them plummet to eighth place, with a mere 8.33% PCT, trailing just ahead of the last-placed West Indies.
Details of the Second Test
In the second Test match, which concluded on Wednesday, Taijul Islam was instrumental for Bangladesh, taking six wickets as Pakistan was dismissed for 358 runs. This performance enabled Bangladesh to clinch a 78-run victory and complete the series sweep.
Taijul Islam, the left-arm spinner, achieved impressive figures of 6-120 from 34.2 overs. He played a crucial role on Day 5 by taking two out of three wickets that fell, pushing the tourists to 316-7 by the end of Day 4.
On the fifth morning, Pakistan managed to add 42 runs before quickly losing three wickets without any further addition to the score within 13 deliveries, as Bangladesh expedited their path to victory. Bangladesh had previously won the first Test by 104 runs.
Key Moments in the Match
This latest victory marks Bangladesh’s second consecutive series sweep against Pakistan, having previously achieved a similar 2-0 win in 2024. The demise of Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who had been resilient in his innings of 94 off 166 balls, effectively ended any hopes for an unlikely victory chase of 437 runs.
Rizwan began the final day with aggressive strokes, hitting consecutive boundaries from Nahid Rana (2-71). Sajid Khan also attempted to relieve the pressure with his scoring. However, Taijul made a critical breakthrough by dismissing Sajid for 28, which broke a substantial partnership of 54 runs and marked Taijul’s 18th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
In the subsequent over, Rizwan fell to Shoriful Islam, cutting a delivery straight to gully, which effectively sealed Pakistan’s fate in the match. Taijul concluded the Pakistan innings by dismissing Khurram Shahzad for a duck in the next over.
