BJP Leads in Assam Election Trends as Congress Struggles
Initial Counting Shows BJP in Strong Position
As counting commenced in Assam, early trends revealed a significant lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aims for its third consecutive victory in the state. In the first two hours of counting, results from 109 of the 126 seats indicated that the BJP established leads in 68 constituencies, while its allies, the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad, were ahead in 8 and 7 seats, respectively.
Among the critical contests being monitored are Dispur, where the BJP has nominated former Congress member Pradyut Bordoloi; Central Guwahati, where the BJP’s Vijay Kumar Gupta is leading against Assam Jatiya Parishad’s Kunki Chowdhury; Sibsagar, where former ULFA leader Kushal Dowari is challenging incumbent Akhil Gogoi of the Raijor Dal; and Haflong, where Rupali Langthasa has replaced incumbent minister Nandita Gorlosa, who switched to Congress.
Congress Faces Setbacks with Limited Early Leads
The Congress party has only secured early leads in 20 seats, significantly lagging behind the BJP. The sole advantage for Congress in Upper Assam appears to be in its stronghold of Titabor, historically represented by former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. The party has been striving to regain its footing in Upper Assam after suffering substantial losses in recent elections.
Current reports indicate that Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress state president and a debut candidate for the state assembly polls, is trailing behind incumbent BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami in Jorhat. Similarly, Debabrata Saikia, leader of the opposition in the Assam assembly, is also trailing in the Nazira constituency following initial counting.
Challenges for AIUDF and Political Landscape
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also appears to be facing challenges, managing leads in only two constituencies, including the Binnakandi seat where party leader Badruddin Ajmal is contesting. As the early trends develop, the overall political landscape in Assam reflects the ongoing shifts in voter sentiment.
As of now, the BJP-led alliance holds a total of 74 seats in the assembly, while the Congress alliance has secured 28 seats and the AIUDF has claimed 15. The reported trends highlight the current electoral dynamics in Assam and underline the various parties’ fight for influence in the state.
