Ravichandran Ashwin Criticizes Axar Patel’s Captaincy Decisions in IPL Match

Ashwin’s Concerns Over Bowling Tactics

Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his discontent regarding the captaincy decisions made by Axar Patel during the Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday. Ashwin was particularly surprised by the choice to use part-time bowler Nitish Rana as a primary option, leading to a challenging outing for the Capitals’ bowling line-up.

In the match, none of the Delhi bowlers managed to maintain an economy rate below 10.00. Notably, Rana, serving as a full-time bowler for the first time in this capacity, was hit for 53 runs in his four overs, resulting in an alarming economy rate of 13.25. T. Natarajan, typically a leading choice for the bowling attack, also struggled, giving away 40 runs in his spell.

Ashwin’s Analysis of Strategy

In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin elaborated on his concerns, stating, “It didn’t happen just once; it happened multiple times. Nitish Rana was essentially used as the primary option in the Delhi Capitals attack, despite specialists like Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar, and T. Natarajan being available.” He expressed disbelief that Rana was the first bowler to complete a four-over spell, calling it indicative of lost opportunities for the team.

Ashwin further contended that even if specialist bowlers have expensive outings, they should be prioritized over part-time bowlers. He noted, “I’ve said this before! Even the best bowlers can have an off day. In T20 cricket, anyone can concede 50 runs. Take T. Natarajan, for instance – he bowled well today but still went for 40 runs. It’s not a slight against Rana to say he might concede 50, but my point is simple: if you have five specialist bowlers, use them. If they go for runs, so be it – at least you’ve exhausted your primary options.”

Specific Criticism of Bowler Usage

Ashwin’s critique highlighted the inefficacy of the bowling unit, particularly pointing to the performance of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. He emphasized that Axar should have relied more on himself and Kuldeep, citing their potential to recover from tough spells. Ashwin remarked, “Today, only two wickets fell. Axar Patel claimed one, and the other was a run-out involving Nitish Rana. Essentially, Delhi’s bowling unit took only one wicket all day.”

He contrasted this with Kuldeep Yadav’s performance, who conceded 30 runs in his initial two overs. Ashwin noted that Kuldeep had previously shown the ability to rebound from expensive bowling to make critical breakthroughs, insisting that, “Kuldeep is a match-winner. Even if he goes for 50 runs, you stick with him because he takes wickets. The same applies to Axar Patel. No matter how the game is going, you trust them – because, ultimately, that is their job.”

Impact of Captaincy Decisions

Ashwin’s remarks underline a growing concern regarding decision-making in high-pressure scenarios within the IPL. He believes that trusting key bowlers is essential for team success, advocating for a strategy that prioritizes their use in crucial moments, even if it means facing the risk of high runs conceded.

The debate over Axar Patel’s captaincy choices may impact future strategies as the Delhi Capitals continue their campaign in the IPL. As the tournament progresses, evaluations regarding player utilization and decision-making will likely remain a focal point for discussions among fans and analysts alike.
