Fire Destroys Six Cottages at Ashvem Beach Resort in Goa

Incident Overview

Six wooden cottages at a beach resort near Ashvem beach in North Goa were destroyed in a fire that erupted late Thursday night. Fortunately, no casualties occurred during the incident, as reported by local police and fire department officials.

The fire ignited at approximately 8:45 PM near the Ajoba temple and quickly spread to the resort’s accommodations. A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, confirmed that fire tenders from both Pernem and Mapusa fire stations were dispatched to the location and were able to bring the situation under control. The officer stated, “There are no casualties. Six cottages/huts were gutted in the fire.”

Response by Tourists and Fire Officials

As the blaze began to spread towards their cottages, some tourists staying at the resort evacuated the premises. Fire department officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but initial assessments suggest that a short circuit may have been responsible for the blaze.

Recent Fire Incidents in Goa

This incident follows a separate fire that engulfed six shacks at Arambol beach on April 4, which also resulted in no reported injuries. However, the safety record in Goa has raised concerns, particularly following a tragic event last December when 25 individuals, including five tourists, lost their lives in a fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in North Goa’s Arpora.

In relation to the nightclub fire, the Goa Police filed a chargesheet last month against 13 individuals connected to the incident, including brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra. The chargesheet indicated that the actions of the accused contributed to the loss of life, describing it as “irreparable loss which shattered 25 families,” emphasizing severe negligence of safety norms.

Fire Safety Concerns

A technical fire safety incident report compiled by the Fire Department revealed that the nightclub fire escalated rapidly due to multiple factors, including highly combustible interior finishes, a high density of fuel load in the bar and restaurant areas, along with flammable furnishings and potential ignition sources stemming from electrical installations. The report highlighted the absence of compliance with safety regulations, as the establishment did not possess a valid No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire Department.

These recent fire incidents underscore ongoing safety concerns in the region, emphasizing the need for stringent adherence to fire safety regulations in commercial establishments, particularly those frequented by tourists.
