Barcelona’s Raphinha Criticizes Refereeing After Champions League Exit

Referee Decisions Under Scrutiny

Barcelona forward Raphinha expressed his disappointment with the officiating following the team’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Although he was sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Raphinha made his feelings known through gestures and statements directed at the Atletico fans.

After Barcelona’s 2-1 victory at the Metropolitano stadium, which was not sufficient to overcome a previous 2-0 defeat in the first leg, Raphinha gestured toward the Atletico supporters, implying that the team would face elimination in the next round. He also displayed a “robbed” sign with his hands, reflecting his belief that the match was unjustly officiated.

Raphinha’s Reactions and Concerns

“To me, it was robbed,” Raphinha stated to reporters. “Not only this match, but the other one as well. The refereeing was very bad. Incredible the decisions that they made. Atletico made a lot of fouls and the referee didn’t show a single yellow card.”

Raphinha’s sentiments echoed throughout the team, particularly as Barcelona dealt with significant disciplinary issues, including Pau Cubarsí’s red card in the first leg and Eric García’s sending-off in the return match after just 79 minutes.

Coaching Perspectives on the Matches

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed similar frustrations after the first match, where he stated that his team deserved better from the officials. However, after the return leg, he restrained himself from discussing the refereeing. “When you see both matches … we were much better than Atletico,” Flick remarked. “But at the end it’s like that, and we have to accept it.”

The team had previously lodged a complaint with UEFA regarding a potential penalty not awarded during the first leg. Players indicated that they also felt a penalty claim was warranted in the second match.

Upcoming Matches and League Standing

Despite the setback in the Champions League, Barcelona is looking ahead to their next fixture against Celta Vigo in La Liga. Currently, the team holds a commanding lead in the league, sitting nine points ahead of Real Madrid after 31 rounds of matches.

This situation marks a significant chapter in Barcelona’s campaign as they assess their performance in both domestic and European competitions, particularly focusing on refereeing standards and penalty decisions that could have influenced their outcomes.
