Ahmed Shehzad Critiques PSL and Compares It with IPL

Veteran Cricketer Voices Concerns

Ahmed Shehzad, a prominent Pakistani cricketer, expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing comparisons between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). After remaining unsold for the PSL 2026 season, Shehzad raised concerns about the quality of overseas players participating in the Pakistani league.

Shehzad pointed out that the foreign players currently involved in the PSL are often those who have either retired from the IPL or went unsold during the IPL auctions. His comments came in the wake of inquiries made to Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis and South African player Rilee Rossouw by Pakistani journalists about their experiences in both leagues.

Criticism of PCB’s Stance

During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Shehzad criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for imposing bans on overseas players who opt out of their PSL contracts to participate in the IPL. He highlighted the predicament of the PSL, stating, “The only players you have left in the PSL are those who retired from the IPL, went unsold in the IPL or have no IPL careers left,” referencing well-known players like David Warner and Steve Smith.

Shehzad further questioned the PCB’s approach, remarking that current players with aspirations to compete would favor the IPL over the PSL. He challenged the board’s decision to impose bans by asking, “So how many more players you will ban?” This statement underscores his concerns regarding the attractiveness of the PSL compared to the IPL.

Comments on Player Experiences

Shehzad also addressed the inquiries posed to Mendis and Rossouw regarding their experiences in the PSL. While Mendis chose not to comment on the matter, Rossouw characterized the IPL as feeling “more of a movie than actual cricket.” Shehzad questioned the nature of the questions directed at both players, suggesting that the queries reflected poorly on the PSL.

He noted that Mendis, despite performing well in the PSL, was asked about his decision to leave for the IPL previously, suggesting that the questions lacked relevance to his current engagements. Furthermore, Shehzad commented on Rossouw’s ambiguous remarks about his performances, pointing out the challenges players face in balancing opinions about both leagues while competing in the PSL.

Shehzad remarked, “Look at Rilee Rossouw – there is no clarity about his performances in PSL, but he has made statements. When asked about IPL while playing in PSL, he couldn’t praise the IPL directly,” emphasizing the complexities players encounter when discussing their experiences in competing leagues.

Conclusion

Shehzad’s comments resonate with ongoing discussions regarding the relative appeal and competitive nature of cricket leagues in South Asia. While both the IPL and PSL have their unique characteristics, Shehzad’s remarks highlight the difficulties faced by the PCB in attracting and retaining top talent from abroad.
