Viktor Axelsen Announces Retirement Due to Ongoing Injuries
Retirement Announcement
Viktor Axelsen, the two-time Olympic and world champion badminton player, has declared his retirement from the sport. The 32-year-old athlete attributed his decision to chronic pain resulting from a long-standing back injury. He cited that his body has ultimately indicated it is time to stop competing.
Axelsen has been absent from competition since October of last year, following a back surgery that did not bring the relief he had hoped for. In a statement to ‘Badminton Europe’, he detailed the struggles he has faced with his back since undergoing surgery in April and expressed his disappointment at experiencing a setback in October.
Impact of Injuries on Career
During his career, Axelsen achieved the world number one ranking for a total of 183 weeks, which ranks as the third-longest tenure in badminton history. His accolades include winning consecutive gold medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics and topping the podium at both the 2017 and 2022 World Championships.
Axelsen also played a significant role in leading the Danish national team to six gold medals in European Championships. However, despite his past successes, the persistent pain and doctors’ warnings about the potential need for further surgical intervention ultimately influenced his retirement decision.
Consultation with Medical Professionals
In arriving at this decision, Axelsen consulted with the surgeon who performed his previous operation as well as his medical team. He was advised that his current level of pain could necessitate more surgery, which could complicate his recovery and prevent him from competing effectively in the future.
“It is simply my body telling me to stop, and I have to follow the advice of my doctors,” Axelsen remarked. His last competitive match took place at the Denmark Open in October 2025.
Reflecting on a Successful Career
Although grappling with the emotional weight of retirement, Axelsen expressed a sense of fulfillment regarding his career achievements. He stated that while the decision was challenging, he was grateful for the opportunities he had in badminton.
“Making this decision has been extremely difficult and at times felt unfair,” Axelsen noted. He acknowledged that his body has contributed significantly to his long and successful career, stating it has been a privilege to compete at such high levels and forge relationships with numerous great individuals in the sport.
As he steps away from the competitive arena, Axelsen expressed his contentment with his experiences as an elite athlete, emphasizing the positive memories he will carry forward from his time in badminton.
