Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to Join Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s Nomination in Wayanad
Participation and Approval of Candidature
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to attend the nomination of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Kalpetta, Wayanad, according to a statement from the Karnataka government. The Congress party had approved Priyanka’s candidature on October 15 following the announcement of the bypoll schedule by the Election Commission of India.
Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader and Priyanka’s brother, endorsed her nomination, expressing confidence in her ability to be a strong advocate for Wayanad. In a post on X, he emphasized the connection Priyanka has with the people of Wayanad, stating, “I can’t imagine a better representative for them than my sister, Priyanka Gandhi.” He urged supporters to join them on October 23 for her nomination filing, underscoring the importance of continuing Wayanad’s representation in Parliament.
Accompanying Leaders
Priya Gandhi will be accompanied by several key leaders during her nomination process. Notable figures including Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Party President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will join her as she files her nomination before the Returning Officer in Kalpetta, Wayanad.
According to sources, Priyanka and Rahul will also conduct a road show starting at 11 AM before formally submitting the nomination at noon.
Pre-Nomination Preparations
In the lead-up to the nomination and election campaign for the Wayanad parliamentary seat, Priyanka Gandhi met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday to seek his guidance and blessings. This meeting was part of her preparations for the bypolls.
On October 19, the All India Congress Committee announced the appointment of Saral Patel as Media Coordinator for Wayanad, indicating strategic preparations within the party for the upcoming elections.
Context of the Wayanad Bypolls
The Wayanad bypolls became necessary when Rahul Gandhi chose to retain his seat in Rae Bareli, vacating Wayanad after being elected from both constituencies in the general elections held earlier this year. As this transition unfolds, it adds significance to Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy in Wayanad.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Navya Hariprasad as their candidate for the Wayanad seat. In comments made on Sunday, Hariprasad noted that her opponent would face “tough competition” in the forthcoming bypolls.
Additionally, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has announced Sathyan Mokeri as their candidate for the Wayanad constituency. The electoral contest in Wayanad is scheduled to take place on November 13, coinciding with by-elections in 47 assembly seats across 15 states. The state of Jharkhand will also hold the first phase of its assembly polls on the same day.
