US Ambassador Highlights Strengthening Ties with India Following Shanti Bill
Emphasis on Defence Collaboration
United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has emphasized the growing strength of India-US relations, particularly in the defence and energy sectors, following high-level discussions in Washington. In a series of posts on X, Gor underscored that defence collaboration between the two nations is deepening, thereby enhancing their strategic and security capabilities.
“Defence cooperation between the US and India is only growing and it’s making both our countries safer and stronger,” Gor stated. He pointed out that discussions with US Deputy Secretary Feinberg concentrated on advancing defence sales and improving military interoperability, emphasizing that the partnership entails “defense sales of US equipment, the best in the world.”
Focus on Energy Sector Cooperation
Gor highlighted emerging opportunities in the energy sector, specifically following India’s recent passage of the SHANTI Bill. He indicated that both nations are now prepared to enhance cooperation in civil nuclear energy and other related areas.
“After India’s historic passage of the SHANTI Bill, we are ready to cooperate on civil nuclear in addition to other areas such as coal gasification and US LPG exports,” he remarked. These comments were made after a meeting that involved US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Washington, where the primary focus was on bolstering energy security and expanding bilateral trade.
High-Level Meetings and Strategic Discussions
According to the Indian Embassy, both nations also discussed new opportunities to enhance the India-US energy partnership framework. Misri’s three-day visit to Washington included several high-level meetings, notably with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Ambassador Gor characterized his meeting with Misri as “productive,” noting that the discussions encompassed trade, critical minerals, defence collaboration, and engagement within the Quad framework. Gor reiterated the commitment of both nations to closely collaborate in the forthcoming months and years.
Commitment to Broaden Strategic Partnership
These engagements highlight the ongoing efforts by both the United States and India to expand their strategic partnership across various domains such as defence, energy, and economic cooperation, especially in light of evolving global and regional challenges.
