Meet George Kurian, BJP’s Kanjirappally Candidate For Kerala Elections

Introduction to the Candidate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that George Kurian will be its candidate for the Kanjirappally constituency in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9, 2026. Voters in Kerala will be tasked with selecting representatives for 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, with the counting of votes set for May 4.

Background of George Kurian

At the young age of 19, Kurian joined the BJP during a period when a faction of socialists split from the Janata Party to unite with the Jana Sangham in 1980. His choice to affiliate with a right-wing party, despite being a Christian, faced criticism, including from his family.

Political Journey

George Kurian began his political career participating in student movements. Over the last five decades with the BJP, he has occupied several significant roles, which include serving as an executive member of the BJP’s Kerala state unit, spokesperson, and national vice president of the BJP’s minority morcha. His political involvement also includes a stint as a board member of the National Commission for Minorities, during which he was the first Malayali to be vice-chairman.

In addition to his various party responsibilities, Kurian was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to O Rajagopal, who was the Union Minister of State for Railways at that time. Furthermore, he served as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s translator during official visits to Kerala.

Electoral History

In the 2016 Kerala Assembly elections, George Kurian contested for the Puthuppally constituency as a BJP candidate but was defeated by the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Subsequently, he achieved success in another arena, being elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.

As of now, George Kurian holds the position of Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying since 2018, and has also been appointed as the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs in 2024.

In his personal life, George Kurian is married to Annakutty, who is a retired nursing officer from the Indian Army.
